So this is my first stab at a tutorial. Heroic Guy. Nothing like taking a moment to look at your work critically and realize it's all bunk. Also, it's getting weird that all I paint are naked barbarians in the snow. Next one will be different! Tut should be up sometime next month, but here is the link:
Looking forward to the tut!
ReplyDeleteThis is really great work so I guess "bunk" means something different to you than it does to me.
ReplyDeleteI'm really digging your work! I'm also looking forward to the tutorial!
Thanks, guys. The tut will greatly disappoint you. My line drawing skills have gotten so lazy! I should have given a disclaimer in the tut apologizing for the fact. It's become something I just use to work out an idea. Making this tut has really made me look closely at my weak spots and try to work on them, and I have a lot of work to do.
DeleteAs always very impressive man. Great pose and feel. I would love to have something to draw my eyes to his face, a dash or brighter yellow for the hair, a glint in his eyes?
ReplyDeleteBravah!
Good eye, Johan. His face was really bugging me too. I updated it, thanks!
ReplyDeleteAwesome man, nailed it!
ReplyDeleteJust got my issue with this in and it's been a great help to me actually. Not 'bunk' at all! I learned a lot from it, so thanks. Big fan of your work :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dirk! Glad it helped. :)
DeleteIT'S FINALLY OUT?
ReplyDeleteOh man,I've been waiting for your tut to come out for so long! I'm getting IFX ASAP!
Ha! Don't get too excited. It would be great if you kept your expectations low.
DeleteI got a chance to go through your tutorial, and to tell you the truth I learned a whole lot from it. Though, I had a hard time capturing a similar feel in lighting that was shown in the magazine and ended with something different. I'd be honored if you could look into it and tell me where I could touch things up at to make it better: http://www.newgrounds.com/art/view/bluesionx/barbarian-study?context=ratings:etm.user:2885185.scouted:.offset:0
ReplyDeleteHi Blue,
DeleteNeat that I was able to help! As far as any advice I can give, I would think a bit of time studying anatomy and form would do wonders. Also material textures. Anatomy books or even muscle mags are great to see how muscles fit together. Fighters, sprinters, bodybuilders, and athletes in general are all great sources for reference as you will often find images of them in tensed action poses. Bridgman, Rubins, and Hogarth all have great books on anatomy with different takes on how to approach drawing it. Studying form will assist you in figuring out how to light things. Life drawing classes are great, master studies...basically, just keep trying and failing. Every failure is a lesson, and every lesson is a step in the right direction. It takes time.
Hey. Sorry to be writing anonymously. I know this is like at least a year old now. I'm a huge fan of your work...and for that matter, anyone who has ever drawn for Blizzard. And I really want to see some tutorials by Blizzard, or former Blizzard, artists. But I can't seem to find any anywhere. Also, I clicked on the link, but I couldn't find this particular tutorial at all. I joined IFX and I searched all over the website, but I couldn't find it. Is it no longer up? Please help! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all can I just say I adore your art so much!
ReplyDeleteHowever, my reason for noting you is to ask you for permissions.
I run a Dragon Age site and I would love love love it if I could have permission to use your art. You would be massively credited (however you want and more!) and I'd be using your art for themes, our custom wiki, and perhaps for avatars. If some or none of this is not acceptable that's fine, of course. I just wanted to ask! I always ask.
Yours hopefully,
Claire
